PLAINS GAME

Africa’s Ultimate

Plains Game Hunting Experience

Plains game hunting is the foundation of African hunting tourism, seeing more hunters pursuing plains game than chasing all the Big Five species together.

For many, a first safari is a memorable and life-changing experience that often sparks a lifelong passion. Plains game hunting is also surprisingly cost-effective, with some hunts costing less than the average elk hunt in the United States.

At Nick Bowker Hunting Safaris, we offer a range of all-inclusive plains game and big game hunting packages with no hidden costs. With over 30 species of plains game animals available in the Eastern Cape, we provide an unforgettable, authentic safari experience on our free-range conservancies.

Africa’s Plains Game

The term “plains game” pertains to the various species of antelope and other non-dangerous animals found across Africa.

While many of these animals inhabit the continent’s vast plains and savannas, species like the Nyala often prefer thick foliage. Plains game excludes the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and Cape buffalo) and other animals classified as “Dangerous Game” (like hippo, crocodile, and hyena).

Popular Plains Game Species

Africa is home to the widest range of plains game found anywhere in the world. Some of the most popular species for hunters include:

Known as the “gray ghost” for their impressive spiral horns and ability to disappear into the bush.

A graceful, common species often included in most plains game packages.

A tough, resilient animal known for its strange appearance and aggressive nature when wounded.

Both males and females carry long, sharp, spear-like horns. They are a large and impressive trophy.

A very resilient animal that makes for a beautiful flat skin trophy.

The Best of the Bushveld

Africa boasts several incredible destinations for plains game hunting.

  • South Africa is the most popular destination, with the Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces known for their abundant wildlife and well-managed hunting areas.

  • Namibia is famous for its vast open plains and iconic species like the gemsbok and springbok.

  • Botswana and Zimbabwe offer classic safari atmospheres with opportunities to hunt large herds of a variety of plains game.

Our hunts are primarily conducted in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where you can find over 30 different plains game species in diverse geographical areas, from rolling hills to open grasslands.

Our Hunting Ethos

Our philosophy centers on conservation-oriented trophy hunting.

We own vast tracts of land and limit the number of hunting parties to ensure an exclusive, high-quality experience. The majority of our hunts are on large, free-range conservancies, which means you’ll be hunting animals in their natural habitat.

Hunting revenue is critical to the survival of these species and their habitats. Over the years, the game ranching industry has re-established thriving animal populations on private lands, surpassing the numbers found in state-owned parks. Your hunt directly contributes to this successful conservation model.

Planning Your Hunt

A successful safari begins with careful planning.

A plains game safari is more than just a hunt – it’s an adventure that supports a vital conservation industry and creates a connection to the wild heart of Africa.

Choosing an Outfitter

Select an outfitter with a strong reputation, proper licensing, and a commitment to ethical hunting practices. A great outfitter will provide expert guidance and access to prime hunting areas.

Preparation and Safety

Physical fitness is essential, as hunts often involve long walks over challenging terrain. You should also ensure you have a reliable rifle and quality gear.

Trophy Care

After the hunt, proper trophy care is crucial. We work closely with our clients to ensure trophies are handled correctly for skinning, cleaning, and salting. We also guide them on the necessary paperwork for export and import to ensure a smooth process.
