Fallow Deer are elegant introduced species in South Africa, originally from Europe.

They exhibit striking variations in coat colour—from spotted or tan to dark chocolate or even white. Only males (bucks) grow palmated antlers that resemble a hand with spread fingers. Hunting in South Africa

Hunts for fallow deer can occur year‑round, but the rut from March through June offers the most excitement.

Bucks are vocal, scraping the ground and croaking to attract does. Nick Bowker Hunting uses spot‑and‑stalk methods. Hunters glass fields at first light, then move quietly to intercept bucks moving between feeding areas and cover. Because fallow deer are quick to spook, concealment and wind direction are essential.

Trophy Criteria & Scoring

Fallow deer trophies are defined by the palmated antlers that differentiate them from other antelope.

A mature buck’s antlers can span well over 20 inches across and weigh several kilograms. Scoring systems focus on antler length, palm width and number of points. Rowland Ward entries often require beam lengths exceeding 28 inches, while SCI scores consider antler mass and width.

Shot Placement & Caliber Recommendations

Aim for the lower third of the shoulder directly behind the foreleg.

This ensures a heart/lung shot. Fallow deer are smaller than many African antelope, so precise shot placement is important. A .243 or 6.5 mm rifle is adequate for fallow deer.
